While living in New York City Mr. van Hoven debuted at three of New York’s most prestigious venues within twelve consecutive months. His debut with New York City Opera was in their production of Mozart’s The Magic Flute, followed by his concert debut in Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall with American Symphony Orchestra singing the role of Hermes in Bruch’s Odysseus, Third Soldier in Hindemith’s Murder Hope of Women and the Second Player in Kurt Weill’s The Protagonist. Mr. van Hoven then celebrated his Broadway debut in Bernstein’s Candide directed by Hal Prince.
Known for his performances of American operas, Mr. van Hoven has performed with Lake George Opera in Mechem’s Tartuffe singing the role of Valére, with Dicapo Opera creating the role of George Lowndes in the New York City premier of Robert Ward’s Claudia Legare and with Birmingham Symphony Orchestra where he was featured in the PBS broadcast production and video recording of Robert Greenleaf’s world premier of Under the Arbor, singing the role of Bubba.
While singing with Virginia Opera Mr. van Hoven was commended by the Washington Post for his “lyrical tenor” in the portrayal of Tamino in The Magic Flute, a role he reprised in a new production with Knoxville Opera. He has worked with Sacramento Opera singing the title role in Gounod’s Faust and portrayed the love stricken Nemorino in L’Elisir d’Amore with Augusta Opera.
Mr. van Hoven is well recognized in operetta and classical musical theater recently singing Camille de Rosillon in The Merry Widow with Shreveport Opera and Opera on the James in Virginia. Specializing in Gilbert and Sullivan repertoire, he has been asked to sing the leading tenors in H.M.S Pinafore, The Mikado, and Pirates of Penzance with such companies as Mobile Opera, Chattanooga Opera, Syracuse Opera, Opera Omaha, Anchorage Opera, Asheville Lyric Opera, Intermountain Opera,Nevada Opera, North Shore Musical Theater, and Huntington Theater in Boston.
As a Guest Artist in concerts he has sung with Roanoke Symphony Orchestra, Regina Symphony Orchestra, Atlanta Symphony, Sunshine Pops Symphony, Santa Rosa Symphony, Sioux City Symphony, West Virginia Symphony, and Long Island Symphony Orchestras. In New York City Mr. van Hoven has performed in three productions with Encores!, most recently Kurt Weill’s Lost in the Stars and has made several national television appearances while working with the Grammy Award winning Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli.
